Race in the Courtroom and Cultural Competency

Presented by Prof. Aya Gruber, University of Colorado Law School, and Prof. Tom Romero, University of Denver Sturm College of Law

The proposed presentation, “Race in the Courtroom and Cultural Competency,” will address issues faced by minorities as litigants and attorneys in the courtroom. The session will cover three to four examples from Colorado’s legal history involving Black, Latinx, and AAPI litigants to provide context for the current environment regarding race and bias. The presentation will then transition to specifically address AAPI persons involved in criminal trials (i.e., defendants; victims; lawyers) and expand on the implications of the “Asian Hate” issue that has received increased attention in recent years.
